Swimming facilities


City-Managed

Clapp, 4500 Ave. U (767-2736); Maxey, 4007 30th St. (767-3739); Mae Simmons, 2300 Weber Drive (767-2732); Rodgers, 3200 Bates St. (767-2734).

Hours: 1 p.m.-6 p.m. all week.

All facilities open May 26; Rodgers and Simmons remain open through Aug. 6; Maxey and Clapp will remain open through Aug. 13. Admission: $2 adults, $1.50 for children (17 years old and younger).

Water slides available at Clapp, Rodgers and Simmons pools.

Adult swim: 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Mondays.

Family night: 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays (family of four can swim for $2, each additional family member $1).

Thursday night: Teen night (ages 13-17 can swim for $1.50).

Reserved private parties: available Friday-Sunday from 7-9 p.m. Pool rentals: 49 or fewer people, $75; 50-149 people, $100; 150 or more people, $125.

Family ($125), season ($50 for children, $75 adult), monthly ($30 children, $45 adult) and weekly ($8 children, $12 adult) swimming passes available, good for any day of the week at any pool. Swim lessons conducted through Red Cross will begin June 5, available at all facilities. For more information, call 775-2670.

Texas Tech Aquatic Center

Available primarily to Tech faculty and students and their families.

Summer hours: 6:30 a.m.-7:45 a.m., noon-8:45 p.m. weekdays, noon-6:45 p.m. weekends. Open year-round (hours change when school resumes). For more information, call (806) 742-3896.

Swimming lessons: Available to general public for $30. Signups begin in May.

For guests of ID holders, admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children.

Lifeguarding courses are offered in the spring and summer. Cost: $60 for Tech students, and $70 for others, and does not include cost of books.

Privately Owned

The Swimming Hole

Located at 3802 Chicago Ave. Open May 29 through Labor Day weekend. Heated pool open to public from 1-5 p.m. seven days a week. Admission: $1.50 for children age 2 and younger, $3 for other patrons. Lifeguard on duty. Special features include a kiddie pool and on-site sand volleyball court. Private parties available from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

Lessons

Seahorse Swim School

Located at 3314 35th St. For more information, call (806) 799-4508.

Tiny Tot program (children under age 4): offered Monday through Friday, times beginning noon or 7 p.m. 30-minute lessons. No advance registration necessary. Cost: $4 for child, $4 for parent per lesson.

Beginner swimmer program (age 4 and up): Times beginning from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. 50-minute lessons. $60 for 10 lessons. Also offered to intermediate- and advanced-level swimmers.

Adults: Private lessons beginning at 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. $12 per lesson. One-on-one instruction.

Private instruction: Offered from 2 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. $12 per half hour. Make reservation a day in advance. Available to any age.

Located at 3101 35th St. One indoor, 25-yard swimming pool. Pool hours: 5:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 5:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Friday; 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday; 3p.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Pool may be rented by private parties during other hours, cost determined by group size. Advanced American Red Cross courses are offered in lifeguard training and community first-aid and safety. American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim lessons offered to adults and children on levels 1 through 7. American Red Cross-certified instructors.

Morning sessions offered Monday through Friday; evening sessions offered Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday. Cost: $30 for YWCA members and $50 for non-members for the morning session; $25 for members and $43 for non-members in the evening.

Separate sessions for Aqua Babies (age six months to 3 years) and Aqua Tots (age 3-5). Half-hour sessions in mornings and evenings.

Water theme park

Texas Water Rampage

Located 11/2 miles west of Loop 289 on Brownfield Highway. Open noon-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon-6 p.m. Sunday. Open mid-May through last week in August, weather permitting. Admission: $12.75 per person, price reduced to $6.75 after 4 p.m.; persons 4 feet or shorter, senior citizens and spectators $5. Group rates available. Season passes $113.27 per person (tax included).
