If you have time to give, Lubbock has numerous social and service organizations, nursing homes and agencies that need volunteers to provide a variety of worthwhile services. For more information about these and other volunteer opportunities, call the Volunteer Center at 747-0551.

Adult Learning Center � volunteers to help with adult education classes. Bilingual knowledge is helpful. 766-1540.

Adult Protective Services -- needs volunteers to help handicapped and senior clients with shopping, errands and transportation. 762-8922.

American Cancer Society -- needs volunteer drivers to transport cancer patients to their treatments. Volunteers also are needed to work in the office. 792-7126.

American Red Cross -- needs volunteers to teach health/safety courses, including first aid and cardiopoulmonaryresuscitation, on weekdays during business hours or on Sundays. Disaster training is free. 765-8534 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Atria Cottage Village -- needs volunteers for activities, to read to the elderly or to play music and/or sing. 799-4225.

Bender Terrace -- needs volunteers as well as bands, someone to direct crafts and someone for Tuesday morning church services. 795-4368.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters -- needs volunteers at least 18 years old to commit one year to the program. Children from single-parent families need outside adult guidance. 763-1631.

Buckner Children's Home's Nurturing Program -- needs volunteers for assistance in nurturing children and babies, helping provide meals, preparing a monthly newsletter and organizing an emergency clothing and furniture closet. 795-1751.

Carousel Care Center -- needs volunteers for visitation, bingo, singing and other group activities. 744-5775.

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Lubbock Inc. -- Needs volunteers to provide advocacy for children entering the court system as a result of abuse or neglect. A 28-hour training program will begin soon. 763-2272.

Covenant-Lakeside Hospital Auxilliary -- needs men and women volunteers for various areas of the hospital. 794-5387.

Catholic Family Service -- needs volunteers for emergency assistance, family life service programs, immigration/legalization service, to interview clients and do general office work. 765-8475, or come by 102 Ave. J.

Children's Enterprises Inc. -- a private, non-profit children's resource agency seeks volunteers to provide transportation for clients to therapy sessions, offer support to victims through support groups and spend time with victims of child abuse and adult victims of crime. 796-0734.

Community Health Center of Lubbock -- needs volunteers to work in clinics, business office and to provide direct client services. 744-1171.

Contact -- needs volunteers for listeners on the 24-hour-a-day help and crisis telephone line, fund-raising and special events. Fifty-hour training session for listeners offered throughout the year. 765-7272.

Epilepsy Foundation for the South Plains -- invites volunteers to help transport people who cannot drive to support group meetings and doctors' appointments. A volunteer also is needed to help coordinate this service and work with the board of directors. 747-0551.

Family Outreach of Lubbock -- volunteer organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Free volunteer training is provided. Become a friend to a family in need of support and help strengthen their lives. 747-5577.

Helping Hands -- seeks volunteers to help with parenting classes led by this child-abuse prevention agency. 745-0322.

Lubbock Area Coalition for Literacy -- needs volunteer tutors for non-readers and individuals who want to improve their skills. 747-7323.

Lubbock Memorial Civic Center -- needs greeters a few hours a day to direct visitors throughout the Civic Center. 767-2241.

Lubbock Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse -- non-profit agency providing information, education and referral services for alcoholics, addicts and co-dependents. Volunteers are needed for crisis calls, speakers' bureau and light clerical responsibilities. 763-8763.

Lubbock District Parole Office -- needs volunteers to provide programming in the District Resource Center including education, employment, cognitive skills, substance abuse prevention and life skills classes, such as anger management, parenting, nutrition and budgeting. 747-8282.

Lubbock Habitat for Humanity -- needs volunteers to help with construction of homes for Lubbock families, for committee work for development, publicity and fund raising. 763-4663.

Lubbock Health Care Center -- needs volunteer singing groups, church groups, bingo groups, etc. Also looking for help with activity programs, helping with projects and visiting bed-bound patients. 793-3252.

Lubbock Hospitality House -- needs volunteers who are interested in visiting residents and helping with social activities. 797-3481.

Lubbock International Airport -- needs volunteers to serve as tour guides for school groups and visitors. Training provided and hours are flexible. 767-2035.

Lubbock Lake Landmark State Historical Site -- a research element of the Museum of Texas Tech, needs volunteers to act as tour guides. 742-1116.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels -- needs volunteers to drive once per week or on a substitute basis or to assist in the office. 792-7971 or come by 2304 34th St.

Lubbock Rape Crisis Center -- needs male and female volunteers to work on-duty shifts answering the 24-hour crisis line and provide direct support services to victims of sexual assault and their families. Completion of 30-hour training session required. 763-3232,or 763-7273.

Lubbock Regional Mental Health Mental Retardation Center -- needs volunteers to serve as group facilitators, instructors, assistant care managers, secretaries and to provide transportation. The organization is non-profit and provides services to individuals with mental illnesses. 766-0327.

Lubbock State School -- needs volunteers to help with direct care and support jobs, recreation, chapel, dormitories, workshops and offices. Training is provided. 741-3532 or 741-3633.

Lutheran Social Service of Texas -- needs volunteers for social service delivery. 763-7051.

Methodist Children's Home -- seeks Christian couples to provide foster care to young children. Some financial compensation. 792-0099.

Muscular Dystrophy Association -- needs volunteers to spend a week as counselors for summer camp in Happy. Also looking for people to work in office or to help with fund-raisers. 793-5632.

Ronald McDonald House -- needs caring and efficient volunteers to lend their skills and talents. The house serves as a home away from home for families of seriously ill children who are hospitalized. 744-8877.

Safety City -- needs volunteers to help instruct children on bicycle, pedestrian and motorist safety. Volunteers may be asked to ride a bicycle, walk the pedestrian path or monitor motorists. 767-2712.

South Plains Association of Governments Area Agency on Aging -- needs individual to become a VISTA volunteer to recruit volunteers and assist seniors with money management. One-year commitment with housing stipend. 762-8721.

South Plains Food Bank -- needs volunteers to work in several areas, including front desk receptionist, sorting food, working on the farm and packing boxes. 763-3003.

Texas Attorney General's Office of Child Support -- needs volunteers for data entry, filing and copying documents. Some duties involve use of computers. 763-3951, extension 149.

Texas Department of Human Services -- needs volunteers to work as front desk receptionists, work with children in the learning center and perform general office functions. 766-6164.

Texas Tech School of Medicine Volunteer Program -- places individuals in 14 outpatient clinics at the Health Sciences Center 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Positions include clinic assistants, clerical assistants and greeters. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. 743-2959 or come by HSC room 1B097.

University Medical Center -- needs volunteers to work in patient-related or support service areas. 743-3349.

Victims Assistance Service -- is a non-profit organization to assist victims and survivors of violent crime. Volunteers needed for one-on-one contact with victims, phone contact and some light office work. 763-3131.

VistaCare Family Hospice -- is looking for patient/family volunteers and volunteers to work in the office and with bereavement and support services. Training classes provided. 748-1041 or 800-499-3464.
